Petrified wood is a type of fossilized wood where all the organic materials have been replaced by minerals, most often silica, while retaining the original structure of the wood. This process, known as petrification or permineralization, occurs underground when wood is rapidly buried by sediment or volcanic ash, which cuts off oxygen and prevents decay. Mineral-rich water then flows through the material, and over millions of years, the minerals crystallize and take the place of the original organic tissues, creating a stone replica of the ancient wood.
