Born on July 15, 1902, in New York City, he was the son of Maurice Hackett and Florence Hackett, who was a silent screen actress.
He began his career as a child actor on Broadway and later transitioned to film during the advent of talking pictures, frequently playing supporting roles.
From 1932 until his death in 1958, he appeared exclusively on stage.
He was the brother of Albert Hackett, a notable screenwriter.
Hackett was married twice, first to Myra Hampton (dissolved) and then to actress Blanche Sweet.
